According to many medias of England on Oct 22,the city council of county borough Lambeth in Grand London will provide free e-cig to pregnant women, as a portion of quitting smoking service. The council declared that such service can save 2000 pounds on smoking every year for every mother-to-be,and can help them quit smoking.
But some health activists criticized it “rather baffling”,they pointed out that, according to NHS,the research on pregnancy is so little that there is no evidence to show if e-cigarette is harmful to fetus. Mean while, NHS made clear that patches and chewing gum can help pregnant women to quit smoke.
One spokesperson of this council explained,smoking in pregnancy is the main risks of undesirable childbirth, such as stillbirth,abortion,premature delivery. At the same time, smoking during pregnancy will increase the risk of fetal respiratory diseases, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, ear, nose, throat problems, obesity and diabetes.the spokesperson also mentioned: “statistics shows that the possibility of low-income pregnant women smoke during pregnancy is much more higher.”
So the council provided “complete and professional service of quit-smoking”, which includes consultancy,action support and nicotine replacement therapy.Now they chose vapes as the preferred supplementary method to make women quit smoking. “because the harm of smoking is much less”.
The spokesperson added that the best way for the pregnant smoking women is to stop smoking and don’t consume nicotine. But it’s difficult to some people,so if they choose vapes, vapes will help them to quit smoking.
